tobhall
is a romantic cluster of small buildings set around
a courtyard, perched high above the river Tay and surrounded
by topiary and woodland gardens.
It
has been home to the Drummond family since the early
14th century. The oldest buildings are the Chapel from
the 14th century and the tiny tower house built on
to it in 1578. The Chapel itself contains an important
painted ceiling from the mid 17th century depicting
the monarchs of Christendom on horse (or elephant)
back. The Dower House dates from the mid 17th century
and the important and unusual plaster ceiling over
the Dower House staircase from a little later. In the
garden there is a folly, constructed in 1989 but containing
late 17th century trompe d'oeil panelling rescued from
a garden house of the demolished Polton house south
of Edinburgh.
There is a small formal topiary and rose garden by
the house, and a woodland garden with woodland walks.
